You are looking at the photographs of a legend in poker. He holds a total of ten World Series of Poker bracelets and many other trophies. We’re obviously talking about Johnny Chan, also known as the Orient Express or the Orange Man. He is one of the most respected and prominent poker players with appearances in movies, books and final tables. Johnny Chan grew up in Canton, China in 1957. He was only a few years old when his family moved to Hong Kong, hoping for a better life. At nine years of age, Johnny had to move to the east and ended up in the United States. He first lived in Phoenix but moved to Houston, Texas at 16 years of age. His family established a Chinese restaurant to provide for a living and young Johnny decided to go to school and get an education. Unfortunately, this young boy spoke no English whatsoever and expressed the difficult time he had from not being able to communicate with anyone but other Chinese. Things didn’t look good for Johnny who didn’t do very well at school. He managed to stand on his feet for a year at the University of Houston, but at the age of 21, he decided to drop out. Like so many others back then, students engaged in poker activities and Johnny was intrigued. He immediately moved to Las Vegas and decided to become a professional poker player. Johnny had an advantage as a poker rookie. He learned that American poker players had difficulties reading faces of Asian players. When he discovered this, he took advantage of it and improved his play from there. But as with most poker players, the first years are usually very hard. Johnny had an almost addictive problem. Once he sat down at the table, he would not stop playing until his chips were in hands of other players. This became a priority for him and once he got control of it, Johnny was once again on the right track. The Orient Express’s greatest strength lies in reading people. He never wears shades and puts a constant, focused eye on his competitors. It is told that Johnny Chan puts extra focus on blinking eyes. He is also a very aggressive player who usually puts fear in his opponents and somehow manages to lure the others into thinking that he’s bluffing despite being aggressive and with a good hand. Some people relate this to the play style of Phil Ivey. Despite his style of play, Johnny expresses great joy at the tables. He constantly chats with other people, laughs and tells stories. He is also known for bringing an orange to the table, mostly because he likes the smell and obviously also because he enjoys the taste. This is why he earned the not so prominent nickname Orange Man. Johnny Chan is no longer working at the restaurant. He is a provider for his family and has earned millions of Dollars throughout his career. His accomplishments at the World Series of Poker can only be measured with Doyle Brunson’s, but some argue that not even Texas Dolly’s ten bracelets is enough. Besides being an excellent poker player, Johnny is a book writer and author of “Play Poker like Johnny Chan”. He is still very active and probably will be for the rest of his life. |
